Black Tom was designed by Floyd Ayers, and built by Morton Johnson of Point Pleasant, New Jersey.

The boat was built for Amos Peaslee.

Amos Peaslee was a very prominent and wealthy resident of Bay Head, New Jersey.

He made his great wealth taking a contingency (law) case against the German government.

Amos Peaslee, with the significant help of the U.S. government, proved that the German government supported (financially as well as through training and organization) an act of terrorism against the U.S.

Specifically, the Germans trained a couple of fellows to blow-up 2 million pounds of armaments headed to Europe to fight the Germans.

The location of the arms (gun powder, bullets, TNT,.etc.) was Black Tom Island which sat between the New Jersey coast and the Statue of Liberty.

The island had a rail (train) transfer station on it that day (July 30, 1918).

The island is now part of New Jersey's Liberty Park through land reclamation.

Amos Peaslee became very well connected through his lawsuit against the German goverment.

He was friends with Richard Nixon actually.

It is on-record that Nixon visited Peaslee at his summer home as Vice President, and it is very likely that he took a ride on Black Tom.

Also of interest, Dwight Eisenhower made Peaslee Ambassador to Australia, and Nixon made him Ambassador to Mexico.

You can learn more about Black Tom Island by Googling "Black Tom Island" and read the book The Detonators which is largely about Amos Peaslee and his lawsuit.
